Valentine Club Art Studio Completes Mural

November 13, 2012 04:40 AM
After one year of studying, planning and painting, the Mural_Final2Valentine Art Studio at Valentine Club proudly showcased its completion of the "Mural of Favorites." This long-term Art Studio project gave Club members a chance to study renditions of famous works of art on a 10-feet-by-10-feet mural in the club’s art room.  As part of the Chicago Sun Shine Project Grant sponsored by the Chicago Sun-Times Charity Trust, the young people studied and re-created by paint "American Gothic" by Grant Wood; "Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh; "The Scream" by Edward Munch; "Sunflowers" by Vincent van Gogh; "Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali; "Mona Lisa" by Leonardo da Vinci; and "Le Basin Aux Nymph" by Claude Monet.
Artists participating in the project met three times mural_photoeach week with an instructor.  The young people chose the paintings they wanted to recreate and instructor Kimberly Molenda designed the collage.  The youth then sketched the paintings on the wall from a Power Point and began painting.
"This project has helped our young people cultivate an appreciation and knowledge for art history," said Valentine Club Director Erin Rochford.  "Even more ideal was how well the group worked together on a long-term project. The experience showed them that excellence often takes time and many hours of hard work, but the results and sense of accomplishment are worth it all."
